Definition: Deprivation of liberty

Various forms of detention, including security measures, combined or split sentences (where at least one part of the sentence involves deprivation of liberty) or any other sanction in which the person is forced to stay at least one night in an institution of any kind, whereby the period of detention is fixed at some interval short of the natural life span of the convicted person (i.e., a determinate sentence). http://ec.europa.eu/eurostat/ramon/statmanuals/files/SeriesF_89_EN.pdf
