Definition: Tonne of oil equivalent

The tonne of oil equivalent (TOE) is a conventional standardized unit defined on the basis of a tonne of oil with a net calorific value of 41868 kilojoules/kg. The conversion coefficients from the specific units to kgoe (kilogramme of oil equivalent) are thus computed by dividing the conversion coefficients to the kilojoules by 41868.
