Definition: Technicians and associate professionals

Category: Research and development

This major group includes occupations whose main tasks require technical knowledge and experience in one or more fields of physical and life sciences, or social sciences and humanities. The main tasks consist of carrying out technical work connected with the application of concepts and operational methods in the above-mentioned fields, and in teaching at certain education levels. Most occupations in this major group require skills at the ISCED category 5. Most occupations in this major group require skills at the third ISCO skill level.

Technicians and associate professionals include people that either belong in ISCO major group 3 or have attained an education equivalent to ISCED level 5. There is a correspondence between the two, which is why in the previous version of this document the explanatory texts for "Technicians and associate professionals" and "Technicians and associate professionals group" are exactly the same. http://ec.europa.eu/eurostat/ramon/statmanuals/files/Canberra_Manual_1992_EN.pdf
