Definition: Strictly monetary expenditure

Category: Social statistics

Strictly monetary expenditure includes only the purchases actually effected by the household. This involves subtracting from the consumption expenditure the value of the goods produced for own consumption, benefits in kind and the imputed rental value of housing. This monetary expenditure concept may, but does not have to, include expenditures not intended for consumption, e.g. property taxes or investments.
