Definition: Spatial resolution

Category: Land Use/Land Cover

In REMOTE SENSING terminology 'the Spatial Resolution is the smallest area (spatial unit) on the ground over which the radiometric signal captured by a sensor is integrated'. The size of that unit depends on the characteristics of the sensor and the altitude of the platform. In discussions of statisticians and remote sensing specialist, this term is sometimes confused with 'observation unit' or 'Mapping unit'. http://ec.europa.eu/eurostat/ramon/statmanuals/files/KS-34-00-407-__-I-EN.pdf#page=33
