Definition: Smoothing methods

When there is a lack of information, smoothing methods ensures the possibility of obtaining both interpolation estimates for the quarterly breakdown and extrapolations for now-casting during the year. They are usually based on mathematically techniques and do not allow, in general, direct extrapolation.
