Definition: Regional unemployment
Category: Regional accounts and indicators
The regional unemployment rates calculated by Eurostat are defined as the number of unemployed persons as a proportion of the active population, i.e. persons in employment plus unemployed persons. Unemployment figures are regionalised by using information on registered unemployed; in case that this information does not satisfy the quality requirements, results of the Community or National Labour Force Surveys are taken into account. The method of estimation is currently checked by a quality task force. Small area estimation techniques might be used in future.
