Definition: Gross national expenditure on R&D (GNERD)

Total expenditure on R&D financed by a country's institutions regardless of where the R&D is performed. As such, it includes R&D performed in the "rest of the world" that is financed by national institutions or residents; it excludes R&D performed within a country that is funded from institutions outside of the national territory (that is, from institutions that are part of the "rest of the world").
