Definition: Basic spatial unit (BSU)

Category: System of Environmental-Economic Accounting

Small area. Ideally, a BSU is formed by delineating tessellations (small areas, e.g., areas of 1 square kilometre), typically by overlaying a grid on a map of the relevant territory; but BSUs may also be land parcels delineated by a cadastre or by using remote-sensing pixels. http://ec.europa.eu/eurostat/ramon/statmanuals/files/UN_experimental_ecosystem_accounting_2012_EN.pdf
