Definition: Coastal region of the European Union

NUTS level 3 region having a border with a coastline, having more than half their population within 50 km of the coastline, or having a strong maritime influence (Source: Methodological manual on territorial typologies).

A statistical region of the European Union (EU), at NUTS level 3, defined according to one of the following criteria: 

- The region has a sea border; 
- The region has more than half of its population within 50 km from the sea;
