According to the use made of the Household Budget surveys, other concepts can be used. Thus the concept of the household's total expenditure includes, in addition to consumption expenditure, certain expenditures not connected with consumption such as the payment of income tax or other forms of direct taxes, social security and retirement contributions, gifts and other transfers. Still excluded, however, are savings and investments.
