Definition: Data swapping

Category: Statistical methodologies

A disclosure control method for microdata that involves swapping the values of variables for records that match on a representative key. In the literature this technique is also sometimes referred to as "multidimensional transformation". It is a transformation technique that guarantees (under certain conditions) the maintenance of a set of statistics, such as means, variances and univariate distributions. http://ec.europa.eu/eurostat/ramon/statmanuals/files/SDC_Handbook.pdf
