Definition: Point-in-polygon
Category: UN - Geographic Information Systems
A GIS operation in which point features are combined with polygons to determine which points fall into which polygon. Using this operation, polygon attributes can be added to each corresponding record in the point attribute table (e.g., health service area information for a survey sample point) or point attributes can be summarized for each corresponding polygon (e.g., number of hospitals in each district). http://ec.europa.eu/eurostat/ramon/statmanuals/files/Handbook_Geo_Infrastr_Supp_Census_Activ.pdf
